Webinar: Preserving and Promoting African Languages

Being African in Africa presents an online discussion on Preserving and Promoting African Languages

Being African in Africa is inviting everyone to an online chat on Preserving and Promoting African Languages, on Friday 31 July at 17:30.

It is estimated that more than half of the world’s languages will become extinct by 2100 and that one indigenous language dies every two weeks.

The dialogue on preserving and promoting African languages is hosted by #BeingAfricanInAfrica, a platform for sharing positive news, stories, insights and balanced perspectives on the continent.

The online conversation, moderated by African Media Executive, Lesley ‘Lee’ Kasumba, will bring together people from different parts of the continent, to unpack the subject based on their experiences and share their views on what they think can be done to help preserve and encourage the use of African languages and cultures.

The discussion on Preserving and Promoting African Languages promises to be lively, owing to the fact that many indigenous languages around the world are quickly disappearing because many indigenous peoples have stopped passing on their ancestral languages to the next generation and have instead adopted the majority language as part of their acculturation into the majority culture.
